About Helen

Helen Bar-Lev was born in New York in 1942. She studied art at the Cooper Union and New York University and received a B.A. in Anthropology from California State University in 1972.
In 1973 she continued her art studies in Israel with Eliyahu Gat, Rachel Shavit, and Professor Yosef Hirsh. In the summer of 1989 she moved to Safed where she had a permanent exhibition in the Artists' Colony until 2001. She currently lives in Metulla, a small village in the north of the country, bordering on Lebanon.

Helen currently continues to paint six hours a day. In addition she teaches classical drawing and watercolor and writes poetry.

  • Helen is the Editor-in-Chief of the Voices Israel Anthology published annually by the Voices Israel Group of Poets in English.

  • Helen's paintings and drawings have been used for book jackets, book and magazine illustrations, poetry anthologies and online journals.

  • Her poems have been printed in numerous anthologies and online publications.

Exhibitions and Clientele

  • Since 1976 she has had over 30 solo exhibitions and more than 50 group exhibitions throughout the world, including London, Paris, the Hague, New York and Israel.

  • She has also been the curator of a number of exhibitions, including the widely acclaimed exhibition "Homage to Yosef Hirsch: An Exhibition of 50 of his Students' Works" in 2002-2003.

  • The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek, mayor of Jerusalem for many years, Ze'ev Pearl, former mayor of Safed, and numerous private collectors from Finland to Argentina, have acquired her watercolors over the years.

  • She is the recipient of the New City of Haifa Medallion, 2000.
